Fight for Retirement Security
Strengthen Democracy & Fight for Retirement Security
1. Protect Our Vote for International Executive Board
WHAT: Ensure “one member, one vote” direct elections for International Executive Board continue beyond the federal Monitorship, which may end as soon as January 2027.
HOW: Require a referendum of the membership in order to change the secret-ballot-by-mail direct voting system.
2. Extend Retiree membership to non-legacy members
WHAT: Extend “retired membership status” to non-legacy retirees, who are currently excluded from continued participation in the UAW if they retire prior to Social Security eligibility.
HOW: Set a basic standard for retired membership that can be applied to legacy and non-legacy members alike.
3. Fight for Retirement Security Union-Wide
WHAT: Prepare for 2028 contract fights with the Big 3 and Daimler Truck, while planning ahead to expand gains to suppliers and other sectors.
HOW: We suggest researching the feasibility of establishing multi-employer healthcare and pension funds. Major unions like the Teamsters have used this approach, securing a base of funding from large employers that allows smaller employers to participate without taking on the full risk and administrative burden. Whatever form these benefits take, retiree healthcare and pensions will not come easily. We need to start preparing for a 2028 showdown, building strong local contract campaigns and readying the organized working class for a show of solidarity.
